Design Consultation & Development

Our comprehensive consultation focuses on fully understanding your goals, providing material & solvent guidance, and recommending formula optimization.  We will also discuss our fiber analysis capabilities so you understand how we will measure our progress. We also provide onsite lab tours with one-on-one introduction to our equipment and scientists. Giving our customers a first person experience of the capabilities we have and our services we provide.

Process Development Implementation & Fine-Tuning

Formulation & Optimization

Starting with either our suggested formulation or your suggested formulation, we prepare and spin the material.  With each iteration, we adjust material, solvent, spinning parameters and/or environmental conditions.  Electrospun material is characterized based on your requirements.  Our experience with many materials and solvents directed at many different applications and outcomes will expedite the process to discover the best formulation.

Characterization & Transferable Recipe for Scalability

With each iteration in our process development, we record measurements such as fiber alignment, pore size, surface morphology, and fiber diameter statistics.  Parameters used to optimize the spinning conditions, including specialized accessories and environmental conditions are recorded as well.  We report these data to you as requested to allow you to either scale your own production or work with us to do so.

Proof of Concept

Before undertaking a process development project, our team can provide proof of concept, with reduced time and materials, to minimize cost.  Even projects that may not be possible with home-built or other commercial electrospinning equipment may indeed be possible with our unique instrument and experienced staff.  We may try new formulations or attempt existing ones that have not been successful elsewhere.  If the proof of concept is successful, you have the option to continue working with us to further develop your project.

Material Selection and Formulation

Our extensive experience with electrospun nanofibers allows us to formulate with a wide variety of materials and solvents. From natural polymers like chitosan and gelatin, synthetic polymers like poly(ε-caprolactone), poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyurethanes and polyacrylonitrile, ceramic materials like hydroxyapatite, metals like platinum, and blends of all these materials.  Choosing the right materials and understanding their solubility in the chosen solvents is key to efficient formulation.

The selection of the right materials and solvents can affect key factors for the finished product.  Material cost, environmentally friendliness, reproducibility, mechanical properties, fiber diameter, solvent residue, and many other considerations are made during formulation.

Process Development

With each iteration of formulation, we adjust electrospinning parameters to improve the electospun product until the target properties are met.  Instrument parameters can affect fiber alignment, fiber diameter, dryness or solvent content of fibers, and thickness of material.  Gas assisted electrospinning can broaden the types of solvents available, which might otherwise clog the emitter.  Temperature and humidity are controlled to improve uniformity and reproducibility.  Also, during process development we can blend or encapsulate multiple materials and create symmetrical or asymmetrical geometries.

Nanofiber Alignment and Orientation

We control for alignment and orientation as many times this is key for the final product to perform as intended.  Whether mechanical strength is the issue, or suitability for a tissue scaffold, each application will have different requirements.  We analyze each production run with SEM, using automated fiber analysis to determine statistics on alignment, orientation, diameter, and pore size between fibers.

Nanofiber Scaffolding for Tissue Engineering

Nanofibers have been widely used as scaffolding for tissue growth.  Understanding biomimicry is crucial, and designing fiber orientation, pore size, porosity, and alignment will allow proper cellular proliferation and bioactive response.

Encapsulation in Nanofibers for Drug Delivery

Developing a functional drug delivery mechanism that integrates into a tissue scaffold can be achieved with encapsulating the drug in the nanofibers. There are various ways we can load single or multiple drugs simultaneously into or onto electrospun fibers to achieve desired drug delivery rates. Including:

  • Blend Electrospinning: Blending the drug and polymer in solution to obtain a uniform distribution of the drug around the fibers.
  • Core-shell Encapsulation: A drug is inside the core structure of the fibers and is protected from the harsh in vivo environment, avoiding non-desired hydrolysis over time.
  • Physical and Chemical Immobilization: A drug is loaded onto the fibers post-creating the electrospun fibers.
